Personality Quirk or OCD? Know the Difference

June 18, 2020

All kids have worries and doubts. Those worries may compel them to behave in certain ways or to fixate on certain thoughts repeatedly. They may have unfounded fears of contracting a serious illness, or have an overwhelming need to arrange things "just so," or to repeat routine activities for no logical reason. Sometimes, these behaviors are just personality quirks, but in other cases they may point to a more serious issue: obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

OCD is a disorder that affects children and adults alike and can negatively impact quality of life. At the office of New Rochelle Psychiatry Office, we understand just how debilitating the condition can be. Our compassionate and skilled staff is committed to your child’s emotional well-being and will work to free him or her from those binding thoughts and actions.

While many may think obsessions and compulsions are one in the same, they’re actually not. Obsessions are persistent intrusive thoughts, images or urges that cause distress or anxiety.  Compulsions are repetitive behaviors that a person is compelled to do to prevent or to ease the anxiety caused by the obsessions. When these thoughts and actions can’t be controlled and they interfere with everyday life, it’s time to seek professional help for your child.

4 common OCD conditions:

  1. Fear of germs or dirt that leads to excessive hand washing
  2. Compulsive cleaning and the need to be organized
  3. A need for symmetry, order, and precision.
  4. Repeated checking – of doors, windows, stoves, etc.
  5. Counting rituals

Early diagnosis and treatment of OCD is best, as it can reduce symptoms and the disruption the illness can create in your child’s life. Treatment, which usually involves a combination of medications and /or therapy, may not result in a cure, but it can help bring symptoms under control.
