If you’re having a difficult time moving past a traumatic experience, at the office of   New Rochelle Psychiatry Office, we can help.

Many people suffer from periods of grief, sadness, and fear. But if you have experienced a traumatic event that keeps haunting you, you may be suffering from something called post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD.

What is PTSD?

It’s important to know that PTSD is a psychiatric disorder and there are therapies that can help. The first step is to discuss your symptoms with a psychiatrist to make sure you get an accurate diagnosis. Typically, PTSD can occur in people who have experienced a trauma such as a serious accident, war, violent crime, or other traumatic event. With PTSD, you may be having difficulty moving forward with your life. People with PTSD often experience recurring, disturbing thoughts and feelings about the event such as nightmares and flashbacks.

These feelings of fear and sadness last well after the event itself. And can interfere with your life—preventing you from moving on, socializing, enjoying family and friends.

Some of the common symptoms of PTSD include:

  • Intrusive memories: reliving the trauma through recurring, unwanted flashbacks, nightmares, and triggers
  • Avoidance: not talking about the event; not seeing those who may remind you of it
  • Negative mood changes: feeling hopeless, depressed, having bad thoughts about yourself; lack of interest in the things you used to enjoy
  • Changes in how you act or feel: always feeling scared and irritable, having difficulty sleeping, feeling self loathing, guilt or shame

If you have experienced a traumatic event and are struggling to recover and feel like your old self again, talk to your doctor about PTSD. There are various therapeutic approaches and medications that can help.
