Free Yourself From Lingering Trauma

July 27, 2022

It’s not unusual for people who have gone through one or a series of extremely stressful experiences to continue feeling the trauma long after the event has passed. They feel depressed, vulnerable and scared. They may be so psychologically scarred that they’re unable to come to terms with the memory. If you’re one of those people, there are ways to help yourself resolve your issues. Seeking help from a psychiatrist is one of them.

From diagnosis to treatment, the office of New Rochelle Psychiatry Office is here for you every step of the way. We give all our patients kind and respectful care to help them rectify their issues as soon as possible. While receiving professional help, these methods of self-care will help you on your journey.

Return to your day-to-day schedule. It will give you a sense of normalcy and control.

Don’t stay socially isolated. Keep in close touch with your friends, family and trustworthy acquaintances. Reach out to those who may have had the same or a similar trauma; they may be able to relate to your feelings.

Stay physically active. Exercise is a valuable way to cope with the repercussions of a distressing experience. A brisk outdoor walk for at least 30 minutes five days a week is a great way to start.

Get out in the world. People with physiological trauma tend to isolate themselves. This leads to a self-centered perspective, obsessive thoughts and limited mental stimulation.

Refrain from alcohol and recreational drugs. They will numb your emotions and memories in the short term, but in the long run, they’re counterproductive and could lead to dependence as well as physical and mental damage.

Keep your body strong. Eat nutritious foods. Your body needs those vitamins and minerals; junk food won’t fulfill your nutritional needs. Maintain a regular sleep and wake schedule.

The office of New Rochelle Psychiatry Office is passionate about treating all aspects of your mental health. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for an appointment. We look forward to helping you.
