The Loneliness Epidemic: 5 Tips To Stay Connected

May 30, 2023

When Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy issued an advisory declaring that the U.S. was experiencing an epidemic of loneliness, it may have come as a shock to some people. With technology allowing us to stay in touch through digital devices and social media platforms, shouldn’t it be easier to connect with our loved ones and communities? But, even before the pandemic, the advisory reports that about half of all adults have experienced loneliness.

As a psychiatrist working with patients experiencing a range of mental health issues, New Rochelle Psychiatry Office applauds the surgeon general’s efforts to bring this problem to the forefront. We agree wholeheartedly with his conclusions that feelings of isolation go beyond our mental wellbeing and are associated with serious risks to our physical health.

Here are several highlights of Dr. Murthy’s recommendations to reduce feelings of loneliness:

  • Invest time in nurturing relationships through frequent engagement with others. Set aside some time to reach out to a friend or family member each day.
  • If you’re struggling, reach out to a family member, friend, counselor, health care provider, or crisis line for help.
  • Reduce behaviors that lead to feelings of disconnection such as harmful and excessive social media use, unhealthy relationships, and disproportionate time in front of screens instead of people.
  • Seek opportunities to serve and support others, either by helping your family, co-workers and friends, or by participating in community service.
  • Get active in social and community groups such as fitness, religious, hobby, and professional organizations.
